National Business Forum On Coastal Marine Spatial Planning

13 April, 2010

The World Ocean Council (WOC), the only cross-sectoral business leadership alliance on ocean sustainability, in partnership with Battelle Memorial Institute will host a 1 day forum on Coastal and Marine Spatial Planning (CMSP) from 13 / 14 July 2011 in Washington D.C. The goal of the forum is to ensure ocean industries are informed and engaged in the CMSP process now underway as directed by the National Ocean Council.

The need for the ocean business community to better understand and engage in CMSP is now urgent. Participation will ensure that Ocean Industry stakeholders can develop and articulate their unique science and business needs relative to new ocean management initiatives as directed by the National Ocean Council. Convening ocean industry leaders with National Ocean Policy representatives will foster cooperative engagement in ocean science, observations, data gathering and information sharing.

The World Ocean Council Forum on Coastal and Marine Spatial Planning will:

1. Create a clear understanding of Coastal and Marine Spatial Planning (CMSP)
2. Define and examine the potential business impacts and benefits of CMSP
3. Ensure the business community is fully informed of the U.S. CMSP process and plans
4. Develop a coordinated business community strategy for engaging in CMSP
